FACTS:

An annual flu vaccine is the best way to prevent the flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months receive the flu vaccine each year. Those at high risk for serious complications from the flu include infants, the elderly, individuals with a chronic medical condition (such as asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, organ transplant, etc.), or individuals who are immune-compromised due to illness or medication use.

Students may schedule appointments online through myUHS up to one week in advance of each clinic date. Penn State student health insurance plans will cover the cost of the vaccine ($21) if received through UHS. Vaccine charges will be sent to the patient’s Bursar account.

Gardasil is highly effective against four types of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), including two that cause most cervical cancers. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the U.S., with more than 20 million men and women currently infected and 6.2 million new infections each year. HPV is most common in men and women in their late teens and early twenties.

Students may schedule Immunizations through myUHS or by calling 863.0774. UHS recommends that students find out ahead of time if their insurance provider will cover all or part of the cost. Three injections are needed. Students may elect to pay the charges at the time of the visit or have the charges added to their student accounts. [more information]

Meningococcal (Bacterial) Meningitis Immunization

Pennsylvania state law requires all students living in University-owned housing must complete the Meningococcal Vaccine Certification form. For more information about the meningitis vaccine requirement, visit the Penn State Housing website.

Meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4) (also called Menactra) works well and protects about 90% of those who get it. It can prevent 4 types of meningococcal disease, including 2 of the 3 types most common in the U.S. Menactra cannot prevent all types of the disease, but it does protect many people who might become sick if they didn't get the vaccine. Make your appointment online or call 863.0774. [more information]
