Workshops Provided by the LGBTA Student Resource Center
Staff and faculty workshops provide an opportunity for participants to actively engage in an educational session to learn methods of creating a welcoming environment for LGBT and ally individuals on campus. The workshops can be tailored to cover topics of interest for your particular area. Please schedule trainings at least two weeks prior to your desired date and let us know if you would like a specific topic covered.
The two basic workshops that are typically offered are LGBTA 101 - Creating an Inclusive Environment, and Transgender 101 - Understanding the "T" and Providing a Welcoming Environment. It is recommended that units start with LGBT 101 if they have not had a workshop on LGBTA topics in the past two to three years.
Our office has also modified trainings to cover special topics. Some examples of specific topics include residence life training (for professional staff and for resident assistants), K-12 Education, University Police training, and trainings for student athletes and athletic staff members.
In addition to trainings on the University Park campus, the LGBTA Student Resource Center provides training to Commonwealth Campuses every other year. These trips provide faculty and staff workshops and Straight Talk Panels. Also, during these trips, Center staff and students from University Park offer a student session. In an effort to provide students with the opportunity to discuss issues relevant to their campus, the student session will engage students in a discussion about student advocacy and ally development relevant to their community. Students from the University Park Campus will offer national and local resources and assist in the brainstorming of ideas for students to promote and maintain involvement. Through this session, students should be able to:
- Identify local resources where LGBTQQIA students can garner community support
- Recognize national organizations where students can gain resources at realtively little/no cost
- Comphrehend the variety of opportunities the LGBTA Student Resource Center offers students from the entire Penn State system
- Organize ways student groups can move forward after the presentation
If you have questions about when the Center's staff will be visiting your campus, please contact us.
