Living in One Neighhborhood (LION) Walk
Living In One Neighborhood is a jointly-sponsored neighborhood program.
During the first week of fall semester classes, the State College Borough, Penn State University's Division of Student Affairs, and the Off-Campus Student Union come together for our annual welcoming event promoting safety, community cohesion, and neighborhood sustainability.
Fall 2010 LION Walk
This year's LION Walk will take place Monday, August 23, 2010, from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. An information session and refreshments for participants will begin at 5:15 pm in the Community Room of the State College Municipal Building.
Penn State President Graham Spanier and State College Mayor Elizabeth Goreham have both already signed on to participate in this year's event.
During the walk, small groups of students, police officers, and senior university and borough officials will walk door to door. The groups walk through neighborhoods where there is a mix of student and permanent residents to distribute information packets. The information provided is designed to encourage both student and permanent residents to be good neighbors and build better neighborhoods.
Information packets will include:
- tips on personal safety
- information on dangerous drinking
- pointers on how to be a good neighbor
- ordinance details regarding trash, noise, parking, and recycling
- emergency contact information
- some nice freebies
Programs similar to the LION Walk have been successful in fostering better neighborhood relations between students and permanent residents across the country. As a result, these communities have benefited from safer, cleaner, and generally more inviting neighborhoods.
Building on the success of the past two years of LION Walk, we are expanding the Living In One Neighborhood program for 2010. While this year's walk will continue to focus on neighborhoods with a mix of student and non-student residents, it will spread out into other mixed neighborhoods within State College Borough. This year's program has also incorporated many more student groups than previous years and is anticipated to be the biggest event yet.
