Fast, Accurate, and Accessible Testing
University Health Services offers an in-house medical laboratory providing convenient diagnostic testing for registered students, including students and student spouses enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) for Penn State. Whether you need routine labs or something more specialized, we’ve got you covered. In-house laboratory testing is covered for University Park students by the Student Initiated Fee.
Our lab is accredited by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation (COLA) and certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). It's staffed by certified medical technologists and overseen by a board-certified pathologist to ensure safe, reliable results.
Services and Testing
Commonly ordered tests such as complete blood counts and urinalysis are performed right on-site. For specialized or less frequently requested testing, we partner with Quest Diagnostics Reference Lab to expand our capabilities. All visits to the lab require an appointment.

To complete lab testing at UHS, bring a valid lab order from your provider to the lab reception desk. We accept lab orders from both UHS clinicians and outside providers.
If you're using an outside provider's order, plan to arrive before 4:00 p.m. Outside provider orders are processed through Quest Diagnostics. Be sure to check with your health insurance provider in advance to confirm coverage.
All Lab Order Must Include
- Patient name and date of birth
- Ordering provider’s:
- Full name and signature
- Address
- NPI number
- Phone and fax numbers
- Complete test order(s) with diagnosis codes

The lab at University Health Services offers STI self-testing to detect gonorrhea and chlamydia.

UHS uses Quest Diagnostics for lab tests not completed at the Student Health Center. Please check with your health insurance carrier for lab coverage information prior to completing any lab work at UHS.

Costs & Billing
Lab tests are not included in basic UHS medical service fees. Charges vary depending on the specific test ordered by your provider. University Health Services accepts insurance for lab services, and all outside orders are billed through Quest Diagnostics.
