Penn State requires all international students to have health insurance and is implementing a University-wide health insurance requirement for the 2019-2020 academic year. As part of the new requirement, all students (U.S. students and international students) must provide proof of health insurance that meets the guidelines below, or purchase the Penn State Student Health Insurance plan (SHIP)

Health Insurance Recommendations for U.S. Students 

  1. Health insurance coverage is effective from August 13, 2018 – August 12, 2019
  2. Coverage does not have any limitations, waiting periods, or exclusions on pre-existing conditions
  3. Coverage has network doctors, specialists, hospitals, and other health care providers in the student’s Penn State campus area
  4. Coverage for emergencies and non-emergency services such as diagnostic X-Ray and lab, physical therapy, urgent care visits, ambulance services, preventative vaccine, and prescription drug coverage
  5. Coverage for inpatient and outpatient hospitalization
  6. Coverage for inpatient and outpatient counseling and mental health services
  7. Coverage for recreational activities (excluding intercollegiate athletics)
  8. Coverage for maternity care (female students)
