Physical Therapy

University Health Services offers on-site physical therapy services to students in the Student Health Center.

We provide services to treat common concerns including ankle sprains, knee or shoulder pain, chronic neck or back pain, pain related to a car accident or computer use, sports-related injuries, post-surgical conditions, and more.

Initial physical therapy appointments can be scheduled by phone. Follow up appointments can be scheduled by phone or online through myUHS.

What is Physical Therapy and how can it benefit me?

Physical therapy is an accredited profession dedicated to serving patients with neuro-musculoskeletal injuries. The goal is to facilitate recovery of function to your desired level of activity. Emphasis is placed on flexibility, strengthening, muscular endurance, balance, and pain relief. All Physical Therapists and Physical Therapy Assistants are licensed by their state to practice.

What should I expect during my first visit?

Your initial physical therapy evaluation will include a review of your medical history and your current problem. A physical therapist will conduct special tests to assess your condition. Be prepared to change into shorts or an examination gown for the initial evaluation.

Based on the evaluation results and your rehabilitation goals, a physical therapist will work with you to create an individualized treatment plan. Treatments may include therapeutic exercise, manual therapy (soft tissue and joint mobilizations), ultrasound, electrical stimulation, traction, whirlpool, and paraffin bath.

Frequency of treatment generally ranges from one to three treatments per week. Duration of treatment may range from two weeks to two or three months depending on your current condition. Don't worry, physical therapy is fun! With a little hard work and patience, your rehab goals will be met in no time.

Referral Process

You can obtain a physical therapy prescription order from your University Health Services clinician or from your private health care provider. Direct access to physical therapy is also available. The Pennsylvania Physical Therapist Practice Act allows physical therapists to evaluate and treat patients meeting certain criteria for thirty days without a physician's order. However, students should check with their insurance company to verify that direct access is covered by their insurance plan.

Fees

Fees vary by based on insurance and the type of therapy ordered. Students are responsible for all charges. Please check with your insurance company and/or the University Health Services billing office for additional information.
