Hosting Socials Responsibly

Social events are a meaningful part of fraternity and sorority life at Penn State—bringing members together, building community, and celebrating shared values. With that privilege comes responsibility. Through thoughtful planning and adherence to University and council expectations, chapters create safe, inclusive, and well-managed events that reflect leadership, respect, and care for one another.

Before hosting a social event, each chapter must submit an individual proposal outlining how they will meet all event guidelines. All events must follow these standards:

  • Event Limits :
Chapters are limited to 10 social events per semester. No day-long events are permitted.
  • Alcohol Guidelines:
Only beer and wine may be served at socials with alcohol present. Service and consumption of alcohol must comply with Pennsylvania law.
  • Capacity Limits:
Social events, whether indoors or outdoors, must not exceed the legal capacity of the chapter facility.
  • Responsible Alcohol Management
Alcohol must be distributed only by RAMP-trained servers to help ensure responsible service and adherence to all applicable regulations.

To help chapters plan and host successful and compliant events, all registered social events with alcohol follow a structured three-step process:

Pre-Event Planning Conference

Conducted at the beginning and midpoint of each semester with additional conferences scheduled as needed. Provides an opportunity to review expectations, answer questions, and confirm logistics.

Event Assessment

An event assessment is conducted for each registered social to ensure guidelines are followed and risk is minimized.

Post-Event Assessment Conference

Held as needed to review the event, address concerns, and reinforce accountability.
