We're Building a Community, Together
Living on campus is about more than just having a place to sleep—it’s about being part of a welcoming, supportive community that celebrates the unique backgrounds and interests of all at Penn State.
Make a Difference Where You Live
Resident Assistants (RA) work to create community for all and keep our campus community a vibrant, safe, and supportive place for all. Gain leadership, communication, counseling skills, and much more in an exciting residential environment.
Navigating Roommates and Conflict
Sharing a living space is a valuable part of your college experience. You’ll learn more about yourself, develop communication skills, and practice respecting others. Even if you and your roommate aren’t best friends, you can build a positive relationship based on mutual respect and understanding.
-
Before you even approach a conversation, set some clear guidelines and boundaries to keep the focus on resolution and avoid escalating.
- Keep calm and don't yell at each other.
- Listen and don't interrupt the other person.
- Focus on the issue and don't avoid the problem at hand.
- Take breaks to let everyone reset.
- Set clear boundaries, together.
-
Express your feelings without blame. For example:
- “I’m having trouble sleeping when the lights are on late.”
- “I feel uncomfortable when there’s an overnight guest.”
-
Asking questions helps move the conversation along and let everyone feel heard:
- “What has the impact been to you and others?”
- “How can we work to remedy this conflict?”
- "How do you think we approach conflict differently?
-
A roommate agreement guides you through common issues and helps set clear expectations from the start.
-
Residence Life staff are always ready to support you:
- Schedule conflict coaching with your Residence Hall Coordinator.
- Connect with your RA for advice and resources.
- Ask your RA or coordinator to help complete a roommate agreement.
- Request mediation if you need help resolving bigger issues.
