Our Calling

We are Penn State’s base camp for adventure and offer a wide range of services and opportunities for indoor and outdoor adventure to students, faculty/staff, and organizations/businesses. Whether you are looking to challenge your group’s teamwork abilities, rent some outdoor gear, spend some time on our indoor rock wall, or join us as we explore the trails and rivers of central Pennsylvania and beyond, we are the program for you.

Group Programs

Our group activities offer a personalized experience tailored to help you meet your goals – whether that’s teamwork, problem solving, trust building, or even just fun! We will work with you to help select the best suited program, based on your group, your goals, and location.

Our Team Development programs work to highlight and elevate group strengths, identify areas of group growth, and expand your groups comfort zone to positively develop your group and its members. Each of our programs runs your group through a series of elements designed to work your group in different ways. This can happen in the air on our High Ropes Course for those wanting an exciting challenge, on the ground on our Low Ropes Course for those wanting similar outcomes but closer to the ground, or by utilizing our Portables Program for those wanting a moveable program that can be brought to a location most convenient for your group. We also offer archery tag, a unique and fun activity that adds some competition to your group development.

Our Climbing Experiences provide an opportunity for your group to bond over the shared challenge and experience of reaching the top of one of our three climbing structures. We have two rock climbing walls, one indoor and one outdoor, that offer climbing routes of varying challenges for any group. If you’re looking for something a little more unique, try our outdoor Alpine Tower which has you climbing up a variety of different climbing obstacles.

Our Custom Trips are opportunities for your group to bond through a unique activities of your choosing. Our experienced guides can help you design a trip backpacking, hiking, caving, canoeing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, or any combination. Let us take care of the logistics while you focus on the experience.

Gear Rental

The Outdoor Adventure office is the hub for all Campus Recreation Outdoor Adventures programs. Our office is located in Room 18 in the IM Building and staffed with knowledgeable students and professional staff who are able to assist with equipment rental, checking out resources, and providing information and advice on anything adventure related.

Our Gear Rental service offers discounted prices for members on backpacking/camping, paddling, rock climbing, winter sports, fishing, and scuba equipment. Reservation requests can be made online, by phone, or in-person. We recommend that requests be submitted at least 24 hours in advance for best service. You can also stop by our office in the IM Building for more information.

Our Resource Library contains a large inventory of guidebooks, field guides, maps, educational/instructional books, adventure novels, biographies, and videos. Resources can be checked out for free for up to two weeks at a time. Stop by our office and take a look.

Indoor Climbing

We have two incredible indoor climbing walls in the Intramural Building. Both walls are accessible to climbers of all ability levels. Equipment and instruction are provided at no additional cost.

The Climbing Wall stands at over 40 feet tall with 16 climbing lanes capable of top rope and lead climbing. This wall offers recreational climbing opportunities for all climbers, regardless of experience or ability. The wall features up to 64 routes, two climbable crack systems, a rappel ledge, and a customized area for teaching anchor building. Access to the wall for top rope climbing is free for all students during "open recreation" hours. Lead climbing and additional hours are available with the purchase of a Climbing Wall Access Pass. "Access Passes" can be purchased on the Campus Recreation website under the "Membership" icon.

The Bouldering Wall is located down the hallway from the climbing wall and offers an additional space for un-roped climbing. The bouldering wall is a great place for beginner through advanced climbers to challenge themselves and work on improving climbing technique. Use of the 14-foot-tall bouldering wall is also free for members during all open hours of the IM Building. All you need is a pair of climbing shoes (available to check out for free) and a bouldering orientation from one of our staff and you’re ready to go.

*Be advised that the Bouldering Wall is closed every Wednesday evening from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. for route setting.

Trips and Clinics

Looking to get off campus and into the outdoors? Join us on one of our trips or clinics to spend some time hiking, paddling, climbing, and more! We offer over 50 trips and clinics a semester (fall and spring), so there’s something for everyone, no matter your interests or experience level. We offer trips for the absolute beginner to trips for those looking to push their boundaries and challenge themselves!

Our Outdoor Trips are designed to enable students to try new activities, explore new places, and develop new friendships. An outdoor trip with us could be your first step to developing a new passion for the outdoors! Trips run throughout the year, allowing you to explore the area in every season, no matter the weather.

Our Clinics are designed to teach you the skills you’ll need to become independent in the outdoors. These clinics are activity specific and provide students with a foundation to develop their own skills through further practice.

Working for Campus Recreation provides students the opportunity to grow as leaders, gain valuable professional skills, and work in an exciting environment alongside professional staff who are passionate about student development.
