The UHS Pharmacy at Penn State

Located in the Student Health Center at University Park, the UHS Pharmacy offers prescription and over-the-counter services for students, employees, and retirees. Whether you're managing a new prescription or need a quick refill, we provide cost-effective, accessible care with the convenience of on-campus delivery, curbside pickup, and home shipping options.

Services and Offerings

We fill prescriptions from your health care provider and offer multiple refill and delivery options. Students, employees, and retirees can take advantage of competitive pricing and personalized support from our pharmacy team. First-time users must complete a short enrollment form before filling their first prescription.

Visit our in-house store for health and wellness supplies, including cold and allergy relief, pain medication, first aid, vitamins and supplements, skincare and personal hygiene, and more. Over-the-counter purchases are available for pickup and can be mailed with your prescription.

Students who self-administer injections can pick up sharps containers at no cost. Filled containers can be returned to the pharmacy for safe disposal and replaced for free.

Generic drugs will be substituted for brand-name drugs. A generic drug is one that meets the same FDA standards for safety as a brand name drug, is therapeutically equivalent to a brand name drug, and has the same active ingredients in the same amounts. Using generic medications, when available helps you minimize out-of-pocket expenses.

When medicine is prescribed for a chronic condition and must be taken on a regular, recurring basis, that medication is classified as a maintenance drug.

Penn State employees enrolled in the Lion Traditional Plan pay only a 20 percent co-insurance on 90-day supplies of many popular maintenance drugs (a cost savings of nearly 30 percent vs. 30-day retail pricing). 90-day supplies are also available with the PPO Savings Plan and alternate insurance; please inquire for pricing.

Maintenance medication refills will be filled within 2 business days.

Payment and Insurance

The University Health Services Pharmacy proudly accepts the current employee/retiree prescription insurance plans, Highmark, and Freedom Blue Medicare Advantage through Highmark.

The Pharmacy can direct bill some major third-party insurance carriers for prescription services, including Aetna, Caremark, Cigna, Express Scripts, Gateway, United Health Care, and more. To verify your coverage, please contact your insurance company.

  • You are responsible for paying the co-pay at the time of service. The Pharmacy will submit an electronic claim to your insurance company on your behalf. Please be sure to have your insurance card available at the time of service.
  • If you are uninsured or do not have your insurance card with you, you may add your prescription service fees to your student account, or pay by cash, check, LionCash, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, or Visa.

Please note that in some instances you may be eligible to submit a pharmacy receipt to your insurance company for reimbursement; however, we cannot bill your insurance company retroactively, so it is very important that you bring your prescription card with you to each pharmacy visit.
