- Contact a close friend who can be with you until you feel safe again. Your friend can also accompany you to the medical exam.
- Get medical attention as soon as possible to make sure that you are physically okay and to collect and preserve evidence through a sexual assault forensic exam.
- Consider whether you would like to make a report to the police and/or to the University. Sexual assault is never your fault- it’s a crime. You are encouraged to report it. It is important to seek medical attention immediately after and as a follow-up to any physical and/or sexual assault to determine the presence of injury, sexually transmitted infection or pregnancy, and to obtain evidence to assist in criminal prosecution options. Ideally, physical evidence should be collected immediately, but it should be collected no later than 96 hours following the incident. You can report to your local hospital emergency room for medical care and evidence collection.
