Information for Penn State Hershey College of Medicine Students

Eligibility

The Penn State Student Health Insurance plan (SHIP) is available to:

  • All current, registered students in the College of Medicine taking (1) or more credit hours

Students who meet eligibility requirements for the Penn State SHIP must actively attend classes for at least the first 31 days after the date when coverage becomes effective.

SHIP is not available to:

  • World Campus students
  • Individuals not enrolled at Penn State who are currently auditing courses

*Please note: a change in student registration status that no longer meets the criteria listed above may result in termination of student health insurance benefits. Enrollment will be audited to ensure that eligibility is met.

How do I know if my current insurance coverage is adequate?

  • Penn State requires all graduate medical students to have continuous health care coverage. For more information, see the Penn State College of Medicine Student Health Insurance Policy. In addition, Penn State recommends:
  • That your health insurance cover you at the campus you are attending
  • That you are aware if your insurance will require pre-authorization for services at the campus you are attending
  • That you know the deductible, co-pay, and coinsurance that you will be responsible to pay

How to Enroll

Eligible graduate, law, and professional students can enroll for health care coverage with the Penn State SHIP by visiting the First Student website.
