Information for Penn State Hershey College of Medicine Students

Eligibility

The Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) for Penn State is available to:

  • All current, registered students in the College of Medicine taking (1) or more credit hours

Students who meet eligibility requirements for the SHIP fro Penn State must actively attend classes for at least the first 31 days after the date when coverage becomes effective.

SHIP is not available to:

  • World Campus students
  • Individuals not enrolled at Penn State who are currently auditing courses

*Please note: a change in student registration status that no longer meets the criteria listed above may result in termination of student health insurance benefits. Enrollment will be audited to ensure that eligibility is met.

How do I know if my current insurance coverage is adequate?

  • Penn State requires all graduate medical students to have continuous health care coverage. For more information, see the Penn State College of Medicine Student Health Insurance Policy. In addition, Penn State recommends:
  • That your health insurance cover you at the campus you are attending
  • That you are aware if your insurance will require pre-authorization for services at the campus you are attending and completing clinical rotations
  • That you know the deductible, co-pay, and coinsurance that you will be responsible to pay

How to Enroll

Eligible graduate, law, and professional students can enroll for health care coverage with SHIP for Penn State using the following steps:

  • Register for classes in LionPATH.
  • 24-48 hours later, log back into LionPATH.
  • Navigate to the current Health Insurance page.
  • Under the current coverage year, select Enroll or Waive. 
  • Follow additional steps to enroll or waiver. 

Once you are enrolled in the plan, there are no refunds or cancelations.

Rates for 2023-24 (Individual Plan)

Medical 1st Year Rates

  • Fall = $1,753.00
  • Spring/Summer = $2,253.00

Medical 2nd-4th Year Rates

  • Fall = $1,412.00
  • Spring/Summer = $2,253.00

Physician's Assistant Rates

  • Fall = $1,412.00
  • Spring/Summer = $2,253.00
  • Summer (New PA's Only) = $1,042.00

International Students

International students and any accompanying dependents are required to submit proof of health insurance coverage that meets a set of requirements or purchase the SHIP for Penn State.
