Resources for Sexually and Gender Diverse Students

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is committed to providing affirming, high quality mental health services to sexually and gender diverse (SGD) students.

Students may find it helpful to talk with a CAPS counselor individually to explore and navigate these parts of their identities and lives. A select group of CAPS clinicians meet regularly to consult and support one another’s work with SGD students in a Sexual and Gender Diverse Care Consultation Meeting.  When making a counseling appointment, students can request to work with a counselor with expertise in working with SGD students, including counselors who participate in these meetings. CAPS also offers specific groups that are led by clinicians with knowledge in this area.

Students may also consider stopping by CAPS Chat at the Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity, available each week, to speak one-on-one with a CAPS counselor. CAPS Chat meetings are free, no longer than 30 minutes, and don’t require a call to CAPS: same day scheduling is available online from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Timeslots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Students can schedule an appointment at their convenience.

The Gender Diverse Care Team (GDCT) is a collaboration between University Health Services (UHS) and CAPS that works to bring compassionate and affirming care to our campus. Providers at UHS meet with gender diverse students to support them throughout medical transitions and in meeting gender-related goals. CAPS providers offer resources, assessment, and consultation related to students’ concerns. CAPS providers also offer services for gender diverse students seeking letters for gender-affirming surgeries. Learn more about the GDCT from this brief videoTo start working with a member of the GDCT, students can schedule an appointment with a UHS case manager by calling UHS at (814) 865-4UHS (4847) or by going to myUHS to schedule online.
