Working at the Center for Arts and Crafts
We are looking for Penn State students (art, art education, or education majors) to instruct art classes and workshops each semester. Gain classroom experience, create lesson plans, and manage art supplies. If you love being creative and artsy, meeting new people, and sharing your skills and talents with others, then working at the Center for Arts & Crafts is for you! If you are interested in any of the positions below, contact craftcenter@psu.edu to inquire about the application process.
Adult Art Class Instructor
We are looking for art instructors for wheel thrown pottery, oil painting, and acrylic painting and any new class ideas are welcome! These art classes are non-credit and designed for beginners and intermediates
Federal Work Study Grant Positions
Students must have a Federal Work Study Grant to apply. Assist with daily operations of art center and ceramics studio, handle class registrations, assist with art programming and events, customer service.
The Ceramics Studio is located in the HUB-Robeson Center, LL 008 (the same floor as the bookstore). The hallway to the studio begins under the stairs; the studio is the second door on your left.
The studio has eight electric wheels, three electric oxidation kilns, clay, clay tools, and a variety of glazes. We offer several instructor-led wheel thrown pottery classes each semester!
Ceramics Studio Memberships
Three-month studio memberships are available during the fall and spring semesters. Members must have prior experience and proficiency on the wheel. The ceramics studio membership fee includes:
- Unlimited use of glazes and firings*
- Open access to the studio during posted weekday and weekend hours
- Use of lockers
- New and reclaimed clay available for sale
*Additional firing fees may be applied if large quantities of work are produced. No outside clay permitted in the studio. Members must purchase clay in-house.
Membership Rates
- Penn State students: $85 (must have valid Penn State student ID)
- Memberships are available for purchase in the main office, 3 Ritenour Building.
Non-credit Art Classes and Workshops
The Center for Arts and Crafts offers a great selection of non-credit art classes and workshops for Penn State students, faculty, and staff. We offer everything from wheel-thrown pottery, painting, drawing, stained glass, and dance, to a mix of fun workshops such as crochet, recycled arts, and seasonal crafts.
Art classes and workshops are free from academic pressure and designed for beginners and intermediates. Class size is small, and classes are offered in a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere to encourage discovery and development of creative skills.
Classes are offered during spring, summer, and fall semesters.

Registration Information
Class space is limited. Participants are required to be a Penn State affiliate with a valid Penn State ID to register for adult art classes and workshops.
The Center for Arts and Crafts is open for registrations on Monday- Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Email craftcenter@psu.edu with questions.
Wheel Thrown Pottery Classes
Learn the techniques of wedging, centering, pulling, shaping, and glazing while working on a pottery wheel.
The class price includes clay, glazes, and kiln firing. A $13.00 fee for a new pottery tool kit is required.
If you have wheel-thrown pottery experience, consider purchasing one of our memberships for the semester.
