Artist's Website

Juliana Cerqueira Leite is a Brazilian sculptor based in New York who explores the complex histories and futures of representing the human form through her works in sculpture, drawing, and video. She works directly with her body as both material form and generator of meaning, interacting with mnemonic materials like plaster, clay, and rubber to capture movements as shapes. Leite aims to question agency and individuality by probing ideologies that define the boundaries of a body and its ability to generate significance through action. She represents the human subject as oscillating between definitions, using materials like clay-filled molds and plaster against her skin to reveal absences and sites of meaning. Her goal is to confuse subjective agency, as the environment and objects suggest actions defined by her own.
